Several years ago some friends introduced me to the concept of “One word”. The premise was simple. You picked your “one word” for the coming year instead of doing New Year’s resolutions. Throughout the year you would remind yourself of your word and see where it would guide you. Others pick a word that they want for their life or business and it has nothing to do with the Bible or God’s guidance. I pick my word a little differently in that I let it pick me. I just know when i have the right word whether it is one I would have chosen or not. I spend time in prayer asking God to reveal the word that he wants to use to guide my coming year and He always does.
The first year the word I chose was “fearless”. I didn’t realize that simply choosing a word and focusing on it would change my life so drastically but it did. I found that year to be the one where I had to face many things that I didn’t want to deal with, fears that had haunted me. I came out of that year battered but stronger and clearer about who I was. It changed the trajectory of my life. I will be honest I was scared to pick another word but glad to see “fearless” be retired.
The next year the word that was brought to mind was “shine”. I found this to be such a fun year. A year where I felt like I got to shine and do amazing things that I had never had the chance to do before. I had never experienced such a time in my life. I really did feel like I shined that year.
So for 2017 my word was “build”. I was a little confused when it was my word. You see I don’t feel like I really pick my words but they pick me. Sounds crazy I know but I always go with it. I feel God gives me the word that he feels I need. And at this point in my journey I have learned to trust it. 2017 ended up being the year that I really built my business into a profitable company. So when the time came to determine the word for 2018 I wasn’t sure what would be next.
The word that has chosen me for 2018 is “abundance”. It wasn’t the first word I came up with, my words usually aren’t the ones I would choose. I always find it interesting and challenging to research the meaning of the word, the origin, what others think that it means and the context of its use. I also love to research its use in the Bible and the verses that use the word. Sometimes I find that there is very little in the Bible mentioning my word for the year or that it may be used in definition but not in the literal sense. But abundance is clearly in the Bible and I was fascinated to learn the verses that use it. Two of my favorites – Ephesians 3:20 and John 10:10. As I spend time meditating on my word and asking God to guide me, I find that it is slowly revealed during the year why it is my word.
So, I’m curious. Do you chose a word for your focus? How do you go about choosing your word? I would love to hear from you. Share in the comments.
